AAAR 37th Annual Conference

Welcome!

Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of the conference organizers, I am excited to welcome you to the 37th AAAR Annual Conference, to be held October 14-18 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon. The AAAR Conference provides an outstanding venue for sharing our latest research progress in aerosol science and technology, while networking and re-connecting with colleagues.

The 2019 Conference will feature a full slate of tutorials on Monday covering a wide range of aerosol science topics including the popular "Hands-on Aerosol Instrumentation Design and Measurement" tutorial. An exciting array of plenary talks, special symposia, poster sessions, platform presentations, and special events will take place from Tuesday morning through Friday noon. Each of these days will start with an 8 a.m. plenary lecture. Our outstanding lineup of plenary speakers for 2019 includes Flemming Cassee (National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, Netherlands), Shelly Miller (University of Colorado Boulder), Hope Michelsen (Sandia National Laboratories), and Neil Donahue (Carnegie Mellon University).

The technical program will feature parallel platform and poster sessions with several scheduled breaks for informal exchange. The exhibit area, open Tuesday through Thursday, will provide opportunities to engage with and learn from leading companies offering instrumentation and services in aerosol science and technology.

Two new initiatives this year are a “Meet the Job Seekers” poster session and a “Meet the Program Managers” event. The “Meet the Job Seekers” poster session is for job seekers to present their background and expertise to potential employers across academia, government, and industry; also for potential employers to meet the job seekers. This will take place at the same time as the AAAR Welcome Reception (Tuesday 6-8pm) in the exhibit hall. Also, this year, AAAR is bringing the program managers to you in Portland, including NSF, EPRI, EPA, NASA, etc. You can sign up for a 15-min meeting with program managers from various funding agencies. This will be a great opportunity to meet the program managers, gain insights for successful proposals, and learn about different agencies.

We will have four symposia designed to bridge multiple areas and promote cross-disciplinary interaction on the following topics:

  1. From Aerosol Dosimetry and Toxicology to Health
  2. Biomass Combustion: Emissions, Chemistry, Air Quality, Climate, and Human Health
  3. The Air We Breathe: Indoor Aerosol Sources and Chemistry
  4. Air Quality Sensors: Low-Cost != Low Complexity

The 2019 Conference will be held at the Oregon Convention Center, which is located along the Portland light rail system, providing easy access to the airport and downtown. Those of you who attended previous AAAR conferences at this site know that it is an ideal location for our meeting. The platform session rooms, exhibit hall, and common areas are located in contiguous space, making it easy to switch rooms and network with other attendees. Portland is a beautiful city that sits on the Columbia and Willamette rivers, with snow-capped Mount Hood in the distance. It has many fabulous restaurants, museums, and gardens, and hundreds of other sightseeing opportunities. Reservations for AAAR reserved room blocks are available through the hotels link under the Travel section of this site.

Following last year’s success, we will continue the “Meet the Pioneers” series and “Fine Particle Art Competition” this year, where you can interact with leaders in the field in an informal setting and showcase your most beautiful artistic-looking particles, respectively. The “Meet the Pioneers” event will be held at lunchtime on Tuesday. We will also continue our fun tradition of 5k group run/walk this year. The run/walk will start at 6:30 am on Wednesday morning from the Convention Center. You can sign up for this event when registering for the conference.

This will be an outstanding conference at a great location that you certainly don’t want to miss. We look forward to welcoming you in Portland in October at the 37th Annual Conference of the American Association for Aerosol Research! See you there!
